    Students' Attitude Towards Technical/Vocational Education & Training Program in Oromia Region

    The purpose of the present study was to examine the attitude of students; particularly those enrolled in Construction and Industrial Technology fields of study, towards Technical/vocational Education 6< Training (TVET) program as a function of the students' gender, field of study, year level and academic attainment. The study was conducted in Oromia Regional TVET Colleges of Asela and Nekemte. Four hundred and twenty five (M=214 6< F=211) students were randomly selected from the three-year levels (10+1, 10+2 6< 10+3) and participated on the study. Five-point Likert type attitude scale plus questions on joining TVET were used to gather data. The final sample total scale reliability was .85 alpha while the sub-scales' were. 82 and. 71 alphas for ''perceptions on the value of TVET program" and ''general attitude" scales respectively. The analysis of variance, mean, chi-square. percentage and correlation were employed for data analyses at .05 significance levels. The result suggested a more favorable attitude of students towards TVET program and its value. Significant gender (in favor of male) and year level (in favor of 10+3 year level) differences in attitudes towards TVET and in perceptions on the value of TVET program were found while that of field of study yield non significant attitude differences. Besides, the correlation of total attitude scores and course exam scores indicated positive relationships. On the other hand, students did not want to study rVET while they were in grade 10. Nevertheless, they exhibited more interest to TVET after they participated in the program. The three most important reasons for students to join TVET were 'scoring low ' in 10th grade national exam, 'personal interest' and 'expectation for further training'. The main source of career information of TVET college students was the popular Media (Radio, TV and News paper) while the function of vocational counseling found to be low. The findings of the study suggest working actively to minimize the male-female attitude gap and to extend further research on students' attitude towards TVET program.
