Item Application of Data Mining Technology to Support Road Traffic Accident Analysis at Addis Ababa Traffic Office(Addis Ababa University, 2005-06) Beshah, Tibebe; Desai, BL.(PhD)Road traffic accidents are among the top le a din g causes of deaths and injuries of various levels. Ethiopia is one of the countries of the world experiencing highest rate of such accident s resulting in fatalities and various levels of injuries. Addis Ababa, the capital city of Ethiopia, takes the lion 's s hare of the risk having higher number of vehicles and traffic. And the cost of these fatalities and injuries due to such road traffic accidents has a great impact on the socio-economic development of a society. This thesis reports on the finding s of a research that had the objective to build a decision support sys tem to handle road traffic accident analysis, for Addis Ababa C it y Traffic Office. The study focused o n injury severity levels resulting from an accident. In do in g so the aim of this research was to assess the potential applicability of data mining technology specifically decision tree technique to help traffic accident data analysis in decision-making process at the traffic office. In the thesis, the process of building a model through know ledge discovery and data mining techniques on historical accident record data is described. Different tools and techniques are also used for the purpose of data analysis. The methodology adopted had three basic steps name Lydia collection , data preparation, and model building and validation. The required data was selected and extracted from Addis Ababa Traffic Office. Then, data preparation tasks (such as data transformation, deriving of new attributes, and handling o f missing values) were undertaken. The final step was mo del building and validation using the selected tools and techniques. The decision tree Knowledge SEEKER algorithm is used in the stud y. The particular too l used for the mo de l building was the decision tree incorporated in Knowledge STUDIO. After successive experiments, a model that can classify accidents w ell with a better accuracy as fatal , serious, and slight or property-damage was selected and evaluated . Experiment result s reveal that the use o f decision tree is helpful in detecting dangerous accidents through identifying behavioral and roadway accident patterns. The reported findings are promising, making the proposed model a useful" tool in the decision making process. And the whole research process can be a good input for further in-depth research.Item Information Systems Development Outsourcing Management In Ethiopia : The Case of the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation.(Addis Ababa University, 2009-10) Atinaf, Muluneh; Beshah, TibebeInformation systems/ technology outsourcing is considered as an approach for information systems/technology management by chief information officers and organization s. Thus it is given due attention by various organization s and management because of the advantages it brings to them. Despite the advantages it brings, IS /IT outsourcing faces problems/challenges and risks at any point in the process that may even lead to failure before its maturity. However, all theses issues are not studied in the case of Ethiopia. This study thus alms to empirically assess how IS/ IT outsourcing is managed III Ethiopia, specifically at the Ethiopian Telecommunications Corporation. A case study approach considering a currently outsourced information systems development project at the corporation is followed so that a better and detailed under standing of the subject can be developed. Furthermore this research titled identify the problems/challenges that the corporation fled during outsourcing and the possible causes of the problems . The research employed a qualitative research methodology, and hence interview and document analysis were major data collect.ion methodologies used. The data collected is analyses as pCI' research questions and objectives of the study. Finally, from the data analysis it is c learly indicated that the outsourcing or organization has failed to mee t its schedule, cost, requirements, and cLlstomer servee objectives. The major causes for these problems were lack of detailed requirements from i.he beginning, lack of detail in the SLAs, bck of previous experience' in sofLw3re outsourcing management.Item Internet-Based Technologies as Source of Sexual and Hiv/Aids Related Health Information Among Addis Ababa University Students(Addis Ababa University, 2009-07) Worku, Elias; Beshah, TibebeBackground: Internet-based sources are gaining recognition as a powerful and low cost method to deliver health related intervention information. In AAU, there is an increasing trend of network and internet services expansion to both students and staff, which greatly fosters the access to any kind of information including sexually and HIV/AIDS related heath information within the university. In order to plan for internet-based health information intervention and allocate the resources efficiently in the university, assessment of its level of availability, patterns and utilization is preliminarily required. Methods: A Cross-sectional survey study method was used to determine the utilization level among undergraduate students of AAU. Self-administered questionnaire was used to collect quantitative data from 929 randomly selected eligible students. Moreover, in-depth interview was conducted to 25 selected students to support the quantitative results. On site observation was also used. Cross tabulation, Logistic regression and Chi Square tools were used for quantitative analysis. And categorization and interpretation of interviewed data were applied to support the quantitative data. Results: Of the total 929 students selected, 86% (803) of them responded and 774 were analyzed. Of the total respondents, 86% (666) of them had ever used internet recently at least once, 39% (300) of them using it for general health information and only 22% (169) of them used it to access sexual and HIV/AIDS related health information. However, only 5% of them used digital technologies like compact disk to access sexually related health information. As their awareness, internet skill and access increased, so did their relative odds of utilization of the technologies for sexual and HIV/AIDS information, which is also significantly associated with their stream and interest to use the technologies. Conclusion: Although the actual utilization of internet-based and digital sources for sexual and an HIV/AIDS purpose is low, it can be a promising strategy to use it in delivering such contents of information effectively and efficiently by expanding its access. Moreover, most students are quite aware and interested to use it for accessing sexually and HIV/AIDS related health information.
