Item The Effects of Performance Appraisal Practice on Organizational Performance and Job Satisfaction in Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority: The case of Air Navigation Department(Addis Ababa University, 2020-07) Bekele, Dereje; Chane, Abraraw (PhD)Many studies have been conducted on the relationship between performance appraisal practices and its impacts on employee job satisfaction and organizational performance. The findings differ as there are different performance appraisal approaches. Besides, indicators of employee job satisfaction and organizational performance vary from industry to industry. This research was designed to address the gap of knowledge about performance appraisal and its role on organizational performance and job satisfaction in the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority Department of Air Navigation. Quantitative and qualitative research method was employed to address the research questions. The result shows that the most frequently used types of performance appraisal were forward-looking approach and incident reporting method in combination as indicated by the respondents. Employees reported that the performance appraisal practice is biased and that they lack confidence in the process of performance appraisal since it is unsystematic and irregular. The results of performance appraisal are not only unreliable but also not communicated to employees timely. The study revealed that organizational performance is hardly related to the nature of performance appraisal. The activities done to increase job satisfaction produced poor level of job satisfaction. In short, there is a converse relationship between performance appraisal practices and organizational performance and job satisfaction. Therefore, it is concluded that the idea and practice of performance appraisal in the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority deserves serious reconsideration. To that end, the researcher recommends the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority should introduce a multi-source feedback or 360 degree performance appraisal methodItem Participation Of Farmers' In Farmer Research Groups: The Case Of Adama Woreda(AAU, 2009-06) Bekele, Dereje; Nigussie, Taye(DrThe aim of this study was to identify the determinants and patterns of farmers' participation in Farmer Research Groups in Adama Woreda. Statistically significant association between socio-economic characteristics and farnlers' participation in Farlner Research Groups were tested. The specific objectives were to: (1) determine the relationship of the socio-demographic and economic factors with farmers' participation; (2) describe the patterns of participation in Farmer Research Groups by farmers and researchers and (3) identify constraints to farmers' participation in Fam1er Research Groups. The respondents were selected through a combination of probability proportionate to size and systematic sampling, and 120 farmers (60 participants and 60 non-participants in Farmer Research Groups) and 20 researchers were included. The respondents were selected from 'Awash', 'Batu Degago', 'Ulaga Melka Oba' and 'Wake Miya' peasant administration. Focus group discussions, in-depth interviews with key informants, and case studies were also employed to collect qualitative primary data. Quantitative primary data, on the other hand, were collected through questionnaire administered by enumerators. Secondary sources were also adequately referred from recorded archives to support primary data. The data were analyzed by using both descriptive and inferential statistics like mean, frequency, percentage, chi-square, phi-coefficient and point-biserial correlation. The findings of this study showed that socio-economic and cultural factors such as age, household size, educational attainment, size of farm land, and gender are significantly related to farmers' participation in Farmer Research Groups in Adama Woreda. Based on this finding, it can be concluded that younger farmers relatively participated more in Farmer Research Groups. Besides, those farmers who had larger households, large size of farm land and exposition to formal education tend to be more involved in the Farmer Research Groups. In addition, the study indicated that the majority of Farmer Research Group members in Adama Woreda have been involved in consultative and collaborative type of participation. There are constraints to farmers and researchers in participation in the Farmer Research Groups in Adama woreda. Expectations for subsidized inputs, farmers' reluctance to work with researchers on the site due to the underestimation of their indigenous knowledge in the research process and inadequate motivation of researchers to use participatory approach have been the most commonly manifested problems among the participants in Farmer Research Groups.Item The Relationship between Social Identity and Interpersonal Relationship of Addis Ababa University Students: The Case of Main Campus(Addis Ababa University, 2010-06) Bekele, Dereje; Abera, Dame (PhD)Social Identity is playing a significant role in influencing people's interactions either in favorable or unfavorable directions. In view of this fact, therefore, this study was intended to examine the linkage between social identity and interpersonal relationship among Addis Ababa University students as the main objective. To realize the above set objective different components of social identity such as gender, ethnicity, and religion were taken as independent variables and interpersonal relationship as a dependent variable. Hence, the researcher has set research questions to check whether there is relationship between the independent and dependent variables and to determine the prediction power of each predictor variable on the criterion variable. The study was conducted on 338 (113 of them are females) Third and Fourth year undergraduate regular students attending their studies at the main campus of Addis Ababa University during the Academic Year of 2009/2010. The participants were selected by the use of simple random and purposive sampling techniques. The study also relied on quantitative method of data collection and analysis. And the researcher used questionnaires as a data collection tool. The participants ' social identity was measured using a 26 items adapted from Aspects of Identity Questionnaire (Cheek, 2002), and their Interpersonal relationship is also measured by a 26 items which was adapted from intergroup interaction scale (Plant, Butz & Taratakovsky.2009). The data were analyzed by Pearson Product Momentum Correlation and Step-wise regression statistical techniques analyzed with the help of Statistical package for social scientists (SPSS) version 13. O. The study revealed that positive and significant relationships were found between all independent variables and the dependent variable. Moreover, gender, ethnic, and religious identities were independent significant predictors of interpersonal relationship. However, among the three independent variables ethnicity was found to be the most prominent determinant of interpersonal relationship among the subjects. Hence, interpersonal relationship of students was mainly dependent on similarity of ethnic background. Finally, the study had suggested some recommendations to address the identified problems.
