    An Assessment of Quality Service Provision by Child Day Care Centers in Nifas Silk Lafto Sub-City of Addis Ababa

    Child care can be defined as care for children by adults other than the parents of the child. Child care can be informal such as care for the children by relatives, nannies or friends while formal child care is carried out in child day care centers, family day care homes, nurseries, etc. This study was carried out to assess the service provision by child day care center for infants and toddlers which is becoming widespread especially in large condominium house sites such as the study areas, (Jemo, Mebrathaile and Lafto condominium house sites) which are located in three different Woredas of Nifas Silk Lafto sub city. The study area is purposefully selected based on the availability of research participants. The finding of the research point out challenges that child day care centers in the selected study areas have in providing quality child care service. The study found out that the service provided in these day care centers is custodial care for toddlers. Most caregivers are not trained and the need for trained caregivers is not recognized. Large group size, poor physical setting, low wages and poor work environment for the caregivers are also other features of these day care centers which compromise the quality of the child care service provision. On the other hand there is no specific government regulation or guideline and follow up mechanism for proper functioning of the day care centers. The critical role of child day care center services for children, families and the society however, need to be recognized and appropriate steps have to be taken for a better quality center based infants and toddlers care service provision

    The Contribution of Micro and Small Enterprises in Community Development in Addis Ababa Gullele Sub City

    Micro and Small enterprises had been playing prominent role in poverty reduction and local economic growth. Apart from this, MSEs have a role in community development by increasing improving social, financial, physical, human and natural capital. This research explores the contribution of Micro and Small enterprises in community development in Gullele Sub-City, Addis Ababa. The analysis was based on primary and secondary data collected through administrative type of questionnaires and key informant interviews from the operators, government officials, and enterprise representatives. The role of MSEs is viewed in light of its contribution in boosting the five community capital (Social, financial, human, physical and natural). Finally, discussion was held with operators regarding the challenge and opportunities the enterprises and operators are facing now. The results indicate that, MSEs plays important role in community development by boosting communities capital. Some of the challenges are some operators who joined the formed group lately did not get any training and the balance of the focus of MESs higher officials in demanding MSEs for politics than community development and poor supportive supervision by MSEs offices are exhibited. Nonetheless, human capital, financial capital, physical capital, natural capital are uplifted and remarkable contributed for community development as bonding capital and networks with other people outside the group is formed in the normal course of business operation as bridging capital. Yet, as there is much untapped potential, much has to be done in unleashing communities resources to boost community development

    Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus Development and Social Services Commission

    The main purpose of this study was to assess factors that affecting labor and managementrelationship in the Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus Development and Social Services Commission central office. Therefore to achieve objectives of the study descriptive method was used in this study. The organization has twenty two branches four area cluster offices and one head quarter. Among which the researcher selected the head quarter using purposive sampling because, all directive and manuals derived from this office and the composition of labor force can represent the branches and clusters as well. The head quarter has a total of 95 employees and this study included 55 employees in the organization which is 57.8%. These are 5 department directors, 37employees at different levels of the head quarter and 13 respondents at two project sites. 6 questionnaires were not collected due to failure to respond by respondents in a given time frame. Questioner, Semi-structured interview, observation and document analysis were used to collect data. The data gathered through questionnaires, interview, observation and document analysis were analyzed using frequency and percentage in a table. Number of male and female employees’ data in different level and positions of the organization were collected. Salary and wage condition, supervisory subordinate relationship and benefit package provision by the organization were major findings in this study. Based on the finding, less female participation particularly on top level decision making body, incompetent salary of the organization, good supervisory subordinate relationship and poor benefit package are drawn in the conclusion. The need to improve woman participation in top level position, the need to improve salary, the need to enhance supervisor subordinate relationship and benefit package reconsideration are recommendations to alleviate the current gap in relation to labor and management relationship in the organization

    Financial Resources Utilization Challenges: in Some Selected Government Primary Schools of Damot Pullasa Woreda in Southern Nations, Nationalities and People’s Region

    Efficient and effective financial resource utilization in schools is base to improve quality education. However, inefficient utilization or implementation of financial resources tends to be the major challenges of the education system in Ethiopia. The main objective of the study was to investigate the financial resources utilization challenges in primary schools of Damot Pulassa woreda in SNNPR for this purpose, both quantitative and qualitative approaches were employed. The methodology employed was descriptive survey which was carried out questionnaire because of its suitability for survey study that has large size of respondents in the five random sample primary schools. The data were collected from both primary and secondary sources; the main instrument was questionnaires; in-depth interviews, focus group discussion and document review. A total of 150 respondents from five schools, 10 key informant interviews and 5 focus group discussions with 35 participants were conducted. The study discovered that the education budget come from the government, School internal income, community contribution and NGOs’ support were the main sources of education budget in study schools. The study also found that the budget preparation, implementation and evolution processes lacked the participation of stakeholder, lack of financially skilled man power, lack of relevant training, absence of internal and external auditing activity, delay in releasing budget, interferences of school principal, engagement of school management on different duties were the major challenges of financial utilization in Damot Pulasa woreda primary schools. In conclusion the schools lacked active participation of stakeholders, capable human resource in financial resources management, practicing financial rules and regulations. Hence, it is recommended that the WEO and schools should take measures to improve the participation of stakeholder, employ financially skilled manpower, budget of school should be released on time, schools should report budget performance to the concerned bodies, regular auditing should be carried out by the woreda education and finance office.

    Human Resource Management Practices and Challenges: the Case of Misrak Polytechnic College.

    The purpose of this study is to identify the Human Resource Management Practices and Challenges in MisrakPolytechnic College. In this study the researcher attempted to show the human resource management practices which are process of recruitment, practice of human resource development, reward and punishment practices, equal opportunity practices, diversity management, retention, evaluation and termination system in Misrak Polytechnic College. While checking the human resource management practices, the researcher also tried to find out the major challenges of Human Resource Management and the recommended solutions in the future. As sources of information trainers, the Dean and Assistant Dean, HRM manager and two officers were selected. From total population of trainers 120 were selected through random sampling out of 238 and 83 questionnaires were completed and returned. 5 administrators were selected for interview through purposive sampling method. Instead of supporting the collected data, the researcher made document analysis on HRM concerned areas. The results of open ended items of the questionnaires and interviews were presented through descriptive statement. From the data collected, it can be concluded that there is lack of rising awareness of HRM policies for employees, The HRM practices of Misrak Polytechnic college needs to be revised and rules and directives are to be seriously applied andhigh turnover rate, weak personal filing and discipline system are the major challenges of Misrak Polytechnic College. Based on the conclusions given above, Its recommended to that the college administrators and stakeholders to take extraeffort in creating awareness about the college HRM policy and to reassemble the HRM department with HRM professionals. The other recommendation to be raised for the Misrak Polytechnic College is that it is better to change the leadership style into managerial style as the discipline issues are getting worse from time to time.

    Practices and Problems of Decision Making in Selected Preparatory Schools of Horro Guduru Wollega Zone of Oromia National Regional State

    The main purpose of this study was to assess the practices and problems of decision making in selected preparatory schools of Horro Guduru Wollega. Descriptive survey method was employed. The sample covered five preparatory schools. Respondents were principals, teachers, department heads, Parent Teachers Association heads, secondary school supervisors and students’ council members.Teacher respondents were selected by simple random sampling technique and the others were by available of sampling. The instruments used to collect data were questionnaire, interview, focus group discussion and document observation and review. The collected data were interpreted both quantitatively and qualitatively. Besides, the statistical tools used to analyze the data were frequencies and percentages. The findings of the research showed that the school leaders were less followed steps of decision making and have low knowledge on how to make decisions; the decisions were lowly meet the objectives and goals of the school. Most of the school principals were not qualified and trained in school leadership, not skilled enough in preparing participatory decision making. They lowly encourage and involve stakeholders in decision making. Due to the above reasons the practices of decision making was poor and had many problems in the preparatory schools of Horro Gudur Wollega zone. Based on the findings the following recommendations were forwarded. Thus, it is advised to give awareness and encourage the stakeholders to increase their participation in decision making. Professionally qualified leaders have to be assigned and giving on job training for them by concerned bodies. The school leaders should have to make the school secular and minimize the interferences of external bodies from school decision making. Also they have to take time and think over the consequences of the decisions before implementation, follow the decision making steps and check whether the formulated decision meet the objectives and goals of the school.

    Principal Leadership Practices, Teacher Motivation, and Student Achievement in Secondary Schools of Addis Ababa City Government

    The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between principals‟ leadership practices, teachers‟ motivation and students‟ achievement in Addis Ababa City Government Secondary Schools. Ten government secondary schools, 387 teachers and ten principals were the participants of this study. The ten sample schools were selected using stratified sampling method; the sub-cities in Addis Ababa City were used as strata. Three hundred sixty three sample teachers to fill in the surveys were selected using simple random sampling method. The rest 24 sample teachers interviewed were selected using purposive sampling method to include well experienced teachers to gain rich information for the study. The ten principals of the sample schools were included using availability sampling method. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected to investigate the issues under study. The Leadership Practice Inventory (LPI) - self and observer formats and the Teacher Motivation Questionnaire (TMQ) were employed to collect quantitative data. Interview guides were used to collect qualitative data. Student achievement for three consecutive years on Ethiopian General Secondary Education Certificate Examinations (EGSECE) was used to represent students‟ achievement. One way ANOVA, t-test, eta squared, and Person‟s r were employed to analyze quantitative data. Qualitative data were presented and analyzed in descriptive ways to triangulate the results of the quantitative analysis. Results of the study indicated a strong and direct relationship between principals‟ leadership practices and teachers‟ motivation. Results also showed that principals‟ leadership practices have direct and strong relationship with students‟ achievement. In addition, the study indicated a strong and direct relationship between teachers‟ motivation and students‟ achievement. Finally, recommendations for future researches and in relation to school principals‟ recruitments and selection were forwarded.
