Item Analysis of State of Nature and Social Contract in Thomas Hobbes and John Locke(Addis Ababa University, 2014-06) Assefa, Dagnachew; Alamineh, Mengistu (PhD)Item Detecting Fraudulent Bank Cheque Customers Using Data Mining Technology; The Case Of Commercial Bank Of Ethiopia(Addis Ababa University, 2017-06-04) Assefa, Dagnachew; Meshesa (PhD), MillionThe ultimate goal of any country wide organization like that of Commercial Bank of Ethiopia is to make maximum effort on delivering effective and efficient services to its’ customer. To attain this objective, organization of such type should decide on the best approaches to adopt. However, this requires detailed and accurate information on the existing organizational systems. Unfortunately, such information might belong at different organization and the data may also need expert effort for using of it. So, for this type of concern data mining make use of techniques and tools to bring out the needed knowledge. Most of the Banking sector have customers of their own. And, those customers are a user of the services given by the banks. Banks have procedures for every service they give in their branches. Although most customers obey the rules and served on the proper way, it is obvious that some other may move on the illegal way intentionally. This kind of customers will bring failure for the bank and a loss for other loyal customer of the bank. One of the service given by bank is cheque, which is exposed for this threat. This research, therefore, tried to figure out a way to handle this problem using DM technique to build a model which predict cheque fraudulent at the time of new customer registration for cheque users. This research also strictly follow hybrid data mining process model to build predictive model that performs better having an aim of classifying fraudulent bank cheque by studying their patterns. The dataset for this study was taken from Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE), a dataset of 6856 rows of customer data and 1154 rows of malicious customer data National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) is considered for the mining task. The heart of this research is bases on experiment conducted using different classification algorithms with diverse parameters. Basically, three classifications techniques are used such as J48, PART and SMO. For each algorithm 10 fold cross validation and percentage split was tried. A model with the best performance was registered using PART algorithm having accuracy of 86.4% with the default parameter. The model drives interesting knowledge such as, although, customers registered in south Addis district who kept low balance in their account has found to be loyal for cheque transaction. Similarly a customer who is a male in west Addis district whose marital status is not mentioned (had missing value) at the time of registration is found to be cheque fraudulent. The research can go for a better accuracy if a standard data has been given, and the research can move one step if the rules generated mapped to user interface for easy access of the model at hand.Item Effect of Service Quality on Customer Satisfaction; The Case of Dashen Bank S.C(A.A.U, 2021-06) Assefa, Dagnachew; Wuhib, Tewodros (Assistant Professor)Service quality and customer satisfaction are critical ideas for businesses to comprehend if they are to expand and remain competitive in today's market. Any modern organization considers service quality to be very important because it contributes to increased customer satisfaction, profitability, lower costs, and improved customer retention. The main purpose of this research study is to examine the effect of service quality on customer satisfaction in some Adds Ababa branches of Dashen bank. To measure the service quality, an extensive survey of the bank customers has been performed with a structured questionnaire distributed to three hundred one respondents of five branches and convenience sampling was used to select the sample. Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 24 has been used to analyze the data and descriptive as well as inferential statistical tools including the use of frequency, tables and Pearson Correlation Coefficient and linear regressions presented. The research result indicated that all the five service quality dimensions (tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance and empathy) have positive and significant with customer satisfaction. Empathy has the significant effect on customers’ satisfaction level which shows that the bank should give due attention for customers feeling, interest and needs in delivering the service. The customers were somehow satisfied with assurance service quality provided by the bank. However, they leveled the service quality provided by the bank as less than they are expected. The study recommends that the bank should enhance its service delivery in all aspects of service quality dimensions to meet the expectation of customers in order to be competent in the market and maximize its profit share.Item Thomas Aquinas on the Existence of God, and Concept of Politics(Addis Ababa University, 2011-07) Atnafu, Abayneh; Assefa, DagnachewBasically, Aquinas’s discussion of the concept of law enables us to understand his treatment of politics. That is why I gave more emphasis on his concept of law. In fact, the main factor why I brought the issue of the existence of God into discussion in addition to Aquinas’s theory of politics is, as I have said in the introductory part, because of Aquinas’s stance (stand point). That is, he insists that the issue of God’s existence must come first with regard to the concept of God and related issues. Accordingly, I brought his five ways into discussion. In addition, his concept of free will is also part of his treatment of politics.Aquinas argues that law is concerned with the common good rather than with the good of the individual. Both Aristotle and Aquinas argue that all good laws are considered good so long as they are enacted for the common good. That means, the ruler should act for the good of the state; his law should aim at the common good of the citizens. Accordingly, Aquinas insists that the basic purpose of the state is to protect the common good. Likewise; law also has an essential relation to reason. Aquinas’s basic argument, with regard to law and reason, is that: “since actions are taken according to reason, that which guides actions also must be taken according to reason.Aquinas recognizes not only one or two forms of law as modern philosophersdo. Rather he provides us with four main kinds of law: eternal law, natural law, human law, and divine law. Among these laws, he considers the first one as thehighest law. Natural law is the rational creature’s participation of the eternallaw; the eternal law as it applies to human beings. Aquinas considers the first principles of the natural law as the same for everyone and known to all. In other words, reason in man is capable of apprehending these first principles. That means, our inclination to do good and avoid evil is derived by our participation in the eternal law. These first principles of the natural law, according to him, are: “Good is what all things seek,” and ‘Good is to be done and promoted, and evil is to be avoided.” All other principles of natural law, according to him, are dependent upon these first principles of natural law. Whereas human laws are mutable, the first principles of the natural laws are immutable since they cannot be abolished from the human heart. In fact human law, according to Aquinas, refers man’s formulation of his own law in order to apply natural law to the specific geographical, historical, and social circumstances. The essential characteristics of human law are - it is derived from the natural law, it is directed to the common welfare of the city, it should be promulgated by the ruler of the community, and it is directive of human actions. Aquinas also insists that human law does not punish who meditates murder but does not commit it. This tells us, according to him, that human law is not competent to judge the interior actions. So, we need another law that is capable of judging both the interior and the exterior actions. And Aquinas calls this law as divine law. With regard to free will, Aquinas insists that free will distinguishes man from the animals because man is the master of his actions through his reason and will. This Aquinas’s standpoint fits with Marx’s view of freedom. According to Marx free will is peculiar to man. The being of free will is man. Marx also insists that man by his volition (free will) adapts his environment where as animals follow a predetermined pattern of behavior; a behavior that adapts the environment (or nature) as it is without struggling to alter it through volition
