Item Refugees Right to Work in Ethiopia(AAU, 2020-05) Asnake , Ephrem; Jibril Ali, Abdi (Assistant Professor); Jibril Ali, Abdi (Assistant Professor)The new Ethiopian Refugee Proclamation No. 1110/2019 reflects the overall development of refugee protection aiming at making refugees self-sufficient. The new Proclamation recognizes refugees' right to work which includes wage-earning employment, self-employment and the right to form and join a trade union in the same treatment accorded to foreigners. This has caused a tension on the host communities around refugee camps. This qualitative study reveals that recognition of refugees' right to work in Ethiopia is a promise which could not be implemented since most areas of employment or investment are designated only for nationals and other areas are unattainable due to high requirements. Thus, specific directive should be adopted for refugees concerning the right to work and conflicts arose thereof could be mitigated through implementing developmental projects which benefit both refugees and host communities.
