(Addis Ababa University, 2014-10) Amare Abebe; Cherie Amsale
Background- HIV/AIDS is a major crisis that is increasingly affecting the most productivesegments of the population in sub-Saharan African countries Objective- the main objective of this study is to determine the knowledge, attitude and practiceof HIV/AIDS prevention methods among commercial sex workers in Alamata woreda, Tigray,Ethiopia 2013. Methodology- Community based cross sectional study was conducted in Alamata woreda,Tigray . Those who practice sex work in their home were included in the study using purposivesampling. Data were collected by interviewer administered semi-structured questionnaire andentered using Epi info version 3.4 software and exported to SPSS software version 16 foranalyses. Frequencies, percentage, chi-square with p-value were used to describe the studypopulation in relation to relevant variables. The degree of association between independent anddependent variables were assessed using crude odd ratio with 95% confidence interval.Consecutively multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to control the potentialconfounding variables under the study. Results- Of those 106 participants 69(65.1%) were from the surrounding rural areas, 49(46.3%)were young aged between 15-25 years old with mean age of 23yrs and 96.2% of them werehighly knowledgeable. All of the study participants (commercial sex workers) were mostvisited (had frequent sexual practice with) farmers. As shown in this study, 24.5% of thecommercial sex workers reported as AIDS can be cured. The multivariate logistic regressionanalysis shows only place of origin was significantly associated with consistent use of condom. Conclusion - The high level of information and knowledge about AIDS seem to have littleimpact than the expected. Therefore, level targeted interventions towards sex workers and theirclients can reduce HIV risk and vulnerability as well as reduce the number of new HIV infectionsamong sex workers and the general populations. Recommendation - The ministry of health and other concerned bodies should have effectiveHIV & STIs programs based on clear understanding of “ who the sex workers are, where the sexis practiced, and who their frequent clients are

Malnutrition and Measle sig. G. Elisa in 0-23 Months Children Comparison of Seroconversion and Vaccine Side Effects, Addis Ababa.
(Addis Abeba Universty, 1988) Amare Abebe; Amare Abebe
A cohort of 9- 23 months old Addis Ababa children were assessed as to their immune response to measl es vaccine in relation to their nutritional status. of the 307 pairs of blood specimens analyzed for meas les antibody, 207( 67.4 %)(32.6%)had had a negative prevace iniltion tit er while 10 0prevaccination titers that were sero positive. Among the sero negatives a 95% sero conversion rat e was obtained with no difference between the malnourished and well nourished. The was no difference inside effects reported to the measles vaccine between well-nourished and malnourished children. Vaccination of thos e who were seropositive at the outset didn't results in an, booster effect, defined by a four foId ris e from the previous titer. Only 9 (9%) of these children showed a booster effect. A validity test for histo ry of measles against the laboratory results gave a 9 5. 1% specificity and 31% sensitivity rate. A second group of children who were under 9 months and were not EPI eligible were also analyzed as to their antibody status Out of 95 children with analyzable e samples 47 (4 9 . 5% ) had detectable maternal antibody while 48 (50.5%) had no detectable maternal antibodies. The waning sets in at an early age and reaches 100% by 6 - 8month s of age.
