(Addis Ababa Univerisity, 2010-06) Able, Genet; Meshesha, Ayele(PhD)
The present study explores location related factors that contribute to student academic achievement. To do this, two sub cities that were assumed to be situated in inner and outer city were selected and 10 schools were purposively sampled from these sub cities. The data were collected through document review of 654 randomly selected samples. To support the document review, close ended questionnaire was administered to 279 randomly selected students. In addition, supportive evidences were also taken from 35 teachers and 10 principals through close ended questionnaire and interview guides, respectively. Analysis of the data collected was made using independent t-test. In addition, percentage was also used for the supportive data collected through questionnaire. The result of the analysis indicated that there is academic achievement difference between inner and outer city school students. In addition, outer government schools perform significantly better result. However, the trends of achievement between years, and outer and inner private schools have no significant difference. Moreover, from the evidences collected through questionnaire and interview, the researcher has identified out of school factors and in-school factors which have contribution to students' achievement difference between inner and outer city schools. Finally, working to minimize in school and out of school factors in inner city schools, strict control and counseling service, experience sharing, increasing teachers and stakeholders' effort and close communication with parents are forwarded as direction to improve student achievement.
