With increased incidences of traumatic events both nationally and globally, the greater burden of care and after-care is usually borne by health care professionals. The purpose of the study was to describe the prevalence of compassion fatigue risk and associated factors among health care providers in St. Paul’s Hospital Millennium Medical College; the Design of the study was descriptive survey. A stratified random sampling technique was used to select 152 participants (52 doctors and 100 nurses). The results indicated that 61.8% of health care providers experienced extremely high level of compassion fatigue risk.The study also show that being in age group25-34 years were slightly more mean score of compassion fatigue risk it indicated that more vulnerable to compassion fatigue than health care providers compared with the other age groups. Nurses had a higher compassion fatigue risk mean score compared with medical doctors. Accident and emergency department and Intensive care unit had a higher mean score of compassion fatigue risk than that of those who work the other three practical settings (Renal Unit, Labor and Delivery Ward, Psychiatric and substance rehabilitation unit). Most of the Health care providers are experiencing compassion fatigue risk. Therefore, it is suggested that the concerned body protect vulnerable health care providers at work to prevent compassion fatigue; methods to prevent the condition may take the form of increasing awareness, knowledge and coping strategies through education and intervention by supervisors and coworkers.
