Conversion of Glucose Into 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural Using Zeolitic Catalysts in Water/Acetone as Solvent
(Addis Ababa University, 2013-09-08) Engidaw, Destaw; Diaz, Isabeln (Professor)
Production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural, which is an important bio-resource intermediate, from glucose was examined in water/acetone solvent system, synthetic and modified mordenites and SAPO-5 materials as catalysts. The treatment of glucose at 100 oC with mordenite and at 120 oC with SAPO-5 materials gives limited amount of conversion. Modified mordenite at100 oC and 48h gave 28.41% and the SAPO-5 materials: 1.5T, which have a number of Bronsted acid sites but weaker in strength gave 13.66% of conversion while that of 1.5B which has a stronger Bronsted acidities gave 18% at 120 oC and 24 h in monophasic systems. In the case of biphasic system, a yield of 7.38 % at 6 h was obtained using synthetic Mordenite at 150 oC. Despite the efforts, the system is not yet optimized.
