dc.description.abstract Solid waste dumping is a serious problem in the Asaita town because most solid wastes are not dumped in suitable area. The main objective of this study is to select suitable disposal site which is economically feasible, environmentally sound and socially acceptable in Asaita town by applying geographic information system and Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) methodology. In this research, data from STRM image with a spatial resolution of 30m*30m; topographical map of the study area, land use/land cover map generated from Landsat 8. To achieve the objectives the present study used factor maps as slope, fault, built up area, road, river, land use/land cover, geology and soil map were reclassified in GIS environment followed by preparation of their suitability map. Even if the degree of weight to each factors vary, the factors were considered very important and mandatory in the selection of suitable sites for solid waste disposal. AHP pair wise comparison module was used to achieve weights of factor parameters and finally suitability map was prepared by overlay analyses on Arc Map platform based on Weighted Linear Combination (WLC) analysis to select Suitable solid waste disposal sites and leveled as highly suitable, suitable, moderately suitable and unsuitable. The result indicates that from total area 5% is highly suitable; 15% suitable; 4.5% moderately suitable, 1% less suitable and 74.5% unsuitable for solid waste dumping. In general, the selection of highly suitable sites requires further geotechnical and hydro-geological analyses to ensure conformity with stringent standards required for design and construction of facility.
