Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to investigate teachers work environment and level of job satisfaction in government secondary school in Nifase-Silk Lafeto sub city.. The study targeted 12 Principals and188 Teachers in N/S/L sub city secondary school. Information was obtained from the respondents through the use of questionnaires. Quantitative data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentage with the help of SPSS computer programmer, while qualitative data were summarized in themes based on research questions and presented in narrative form and direct quote from participants. The results make a significant contribution to new knowledge and understanding of current issues relating to the job satisfaction of teachers in selected high schools in NSL sub city Addis Ababa. The results indicated that the teachers were significantly dissatisfied with most aspects of their work. Motivation and safety emerged as the primary dissatisfying aspect of all the work factors. Other areas of dissatisfaction related to uncomfortable work place, and the poor relationships teachers have with the principals and with co-workers. In addition, all four of the identified factors were found to have statistically significant with job satisfaction. Qualitative data confirmed the quantitative results. Finally, recommendations were made in order to enhance the job satisfaction of secondary school teachers in N/S/L sub city, and for further research.
