Abstract:
The study focused on the practices and challenges of management of adult education program in Hadiya zone, SNNP. To achieve the objectives of the study, basic questions were asked regarding organization and staffing adult education centres, participation in planning, monitoring and evaluation of adult education training centre activities, strategies of managing adult education program, supports provided from woreda education office and zonal education department to adult education centres to strengthen their managerial capacity and factors affecting management of adult education program. Hence, based on its finding the research in its last section puts useful recommendation which believed to be important in mitigating existing challenge and problem observed in the area of the study. Regarding to the methodology of the study, descriptive survey has been used and data were collected from adult education facilitators, adult education learners, primary school principals, woreda education office and zonal education department experts and heads by using instruments such as questionnaire, semi structured interview, focus group discussion, document analysis and observational check list. Accordingly 117 respondents participated in the study and data that have been collected through the use of a questionnaire was analyzed quantitatively by using statistical tools such as percentage, frequency count, mean and standard deviation whereas the information gathered by using interview, focus group discussion and observation checklist were transcribed, qualitatively analyzed, interpreted and expressed by using descriptive statements. Correspondingly, findings showed that lack of effective structural organization to manage adult education program, absences of incentives, lack of adequate educational materials, low participation of facilitators and community in planning process, and lack of awareness of community about the important of the adult education program. Findings also depicted that adult education program was challenge by many constraints. That is inadequate budget allocation for the program, poor stakeholder participation, Shortage of student text book and absence of reference books, lack of training in enhancing the capacity of facilitators, poor management and inadequate supervision of the program were found to be the major factors that directly or tacitly influence the implementation of adult education program. Finally, on the findings, the study argue that developing and the provision of standardized and on-job training for facilitators, improving the work condition of facilitators, strengthening the capacity of adult education training centres’ coordinating committee, and collaboration of other local communities are vital components in strengthening the program. Serious attention should also be given to create awareness of the society about importance of adult education program.
