Abstract:
The main purpose of this study was to assess the factors that contribute to students’ dropout and to identify measures taken to minimize students’ dropout Descriptive survey method was employed. Data were collected from 135 teachers and 153 returnee students through questionnaires. Proportional stratified random sampling was employed to select teachers and returnee students’ respondents from both groups (male and female). Interviews were carried out with 5 sample school principals and 5 parent-Teacher-Association (PTA) leaders. The data obtained from the questionnaires were analyzed using different statistical tools like percentage, frequency, mean and standard deviation while the data obtained from the documents were analyzed using percentage. The data analysis is to identify the contributing factors of students’ dropout. The high rate of students’ dropout in the study area is the result of school resources and facilities related factors such as the class size or number of students in a class and how well are the school rules and regulations, teachers and students related factors such as attractiveness of teaching method and appropriate evaluation of student’s performance and family and community related factor is parents need of child labor. Depending on the result of the findings creating conducive school environment, strengthen educational management and management information system, improving teaching methods and assessment practice are forwarded as recommendations in the schools of the study area.
