Abstract: This research is prepared for the stress analysis on the rail joints due to thermal, lateral and longitudinal forces using Finite Element Method to improve the understanding of the rail joint selection for Addis Ababa Light Rail Transient (AA-LRT) rail engineers. In stress analysis of rail joints due to thermal, lateral forces and longitudinal forces, the main problem is investigating which type of rail joint will be better in the future by considering different loads on joints. Therefore, rail joint stress analysis using Finite Element Method is one of the research areas that would be investigated to overcome the problem. Furthermore, the research target to; determine types of applied load and conditions for standard rail joint and welded rail joint. This research specified for typical data obtained from Addis Ababa Light Railway Transit (AA LRT). A railway train (one tram car) comprising of two Mc and one T module are considered. Analysis would be carried out for only one side of the railway track. The analysis reveals that high stress generated on standard rail joint compared with welded rail joint. It is important to identify these stress on two rail joints for the case of AA LRT in order to select the better rail joint in the future.
