dc.description.abstractA year-round ecological study of G. morsitans ugandensis was carried out from September 1980 to August, 1981 in the Finchaa River Valley in the Western part of Ethiopia. Three different sampling methods, namely Vehicle Patrol method, Screen/ Hand net method and Biconical Traps were employed. All were found to be effective. The mono-species composition, the unimodal seasonal fluctuation and the biphasic diel activity of the tsetse flies of the area were determined. The effect of various factors (eg. climate, altitude, vegetation, etc.) that interplay with the eco-distribution of this species of tsetse fly were statistically tested. Conditions related to temperatures, rainfall vegetation and bush-fire affected the fly population and distribution. The apparent density {A.D.) was high during and after the rainy seasons and low during the dry season. The sex ratio indicated that more males wore captured with the Vehicle Patrol and Screen/Hand net methods while the reverse was the case with the Bioonical Traps. The age structure of the flies showed that most of the flies were in the pre-reproductive and reproductive stages. Observations on the physiological condition of the flies depicted a very high proportion of hungry flies and a relatively low fed and pregnant flies. Blood-meal analysis carried out on G.m. ugandensis in Finchaa showed man, wild pig and warthog to be the main vertebrate hosts. The infection rate of flies in the valley was low although a fairly high infection rate in cattle was observed on the edge of the escarpment.en_US
