|Abstract: ||Women are the primary important members of the family, predominantly as a mother, in taking
care of their children. Mothers carry prime responsibility, in care of their children in any society.
Although caring for children are generally a challenge, the degree of the challenge varies with the
needs of the children. For example, caring for an ‘able’ or ‘normal’ child is relatively easier than
the child with the disabilities. Challenges of caring for children also vary with the type of
disability that the children have. In some cases, the degree of the problem falls in with increase
in the age and growth of children. In case of mental retardation, the problem is completely
different and the study was focused on this area, with the general objective of examining the
maternal experiences of children with mental retardation (MR), in six schools of Addis Ababa,
which have special primary classrooms for the children with MR.
A qualitative research approach was selected in order to have a deep in-sight about mothers'
experience in bringing up children with mental retardation. A case study design was used,
whereby the researcher investigates the respondent's/Participants’ perspective, using interview
sessions and semi-participant observation methods, to collect the empirical data for the study. Six
mothers of children with mentally retardation has been included in the study.
According to the findings, given that the mothers of MR children have no clear idea about the
cause and the type of the problem, apart from traditional guesses, bringing up the child, without
any professional input and economic support, is the most challenging task on top of the family
burden. Consequently, mothers of children with mental retardation (MR), were found in a
horrible state. They indicated that they tried different ways to treat the MR. They took their
children with MR to physicians, holly water, and to other forms of treatment depending on their
faith. However, as they could not see any improvement, some mothers attempted committing
The findings further reveal that the mistreatment, abuse and rape that their children face in their
community have made the mothers to isolate themselves from the community. However, given
that the problem is such a serious one, mothers have not been given due attention. Therefore, as
citizens, they need attention from the Government body, Non Governmental Organizations
(NGO), professionals, the community, the teachers at school and of course their families.
Contributions of such societal bodies to mothers of children with MR, would help the prospects
of the mothers and their children.|
