Abstract: The purposes of the study were to identify and compare the alternative conceptions of eight chemical concepts held by grade 10 and 12 students of Addis Ababa. The eight chemical concepts of study were particulate nature of matter, macro and microproperties, conservation of mass, mole, equation and stoichiometry, changes of state, gas and solutions. Open-ended pilot chemical concepts inventory was used to generate the alternative conceptions relevant to the grade levels. From the findings of the pilot study it was found that the students held diverse alternative conceptions. Those alternative conceptions with high frequencies were used as destructors in the final version of the multiple-choice questions of the inventory. For comparison of the extent of alternative conceptions percent and t-test were used. Finally comparing the two grade levels in generally it was found that grade 12 students alternative conceptions on the concepts studied were not statistically significant in most of the chemical concepts as expected compared to grade 10 students.
