Abstract: Economic development in Ethiopia and particularly in Gambella has resulted in significant change in all aspect of sexual activity. Sexual attitude and sexual behaviour of adolescents have changed from conservative to liberal. Premarital sexual activity has markedly increased and become more socially accepted. However, the prevalence of condom use in the first and last sexual intercourse is still low. Different socio-economic and demographic factors of parents and adolescents have well studied in Gambella town and many protective factors for adolescents’ sexual behaviour have found. And this study investigates different characteristics of parents which affect early sexual initiation of adolescents. A cross sectional survey was conducted among 713 adolescents age group of 13-19. Two preparatory and secondary high school students in Gambella town have participated in the study. Logistic regression has employed to identify the influence of different characteristics of parents and the respondent. The study has depicted that 34.6 percent of adolescents had experienced sexual activity, among those, only 17.3 percent of them have used condom in their last sexual intercourse. Including condom 71 percent of the study participants have never used any contraceptive in their sexual life. The result have showed that parent-adolescents communication has no direct influence on the sexual activity of adolescents while parental control or supervision, parental education( mothers and fathers), mothers occupation and household income have a greater influence on adolescents sexual behaviour. Adolescents who were having strict parental control were less sexually experienced than lose and liberally controlled respectively. In addition, an adolescent whose mother were college/ university graduate is less sexually experienced than those from illiterate ones (49.8 percent). In general parental influence on early sexual initiation and practice is paramount. Different intervention program have aimed to decrease risky sexual behaviour of adolescents and the program should be extensive to include parents parallel with adolescents.
