|Abstract: ||The thesis is a contrastive study of the auxiliary in Amharic
and English, usinG TG model.
In the study, the surface and deep structures of the auxiliary
in Amharic and English have been described and analysed separately.
Then, the surface structure contrast and the deep to surface structure
contrast of the two languages have been investigated.
On the basis of this contrastive analysis it has been found
that the constituents of the auxiliary in English (i.e., Tense,
Modal and Aspect) are systematically different from the constituents
of the auxiliary in Amharic (i.e., Aspect, Modal and Tense) even
in this order. Based on the result of this comparison, hypothetica1
predictions of errors have been made which may be committed by
Amharic speakers in learning the auxiliary in English.
Finally, pattern practice based on the generative and transformational rules discussed in the study has been recommended as a
method of overcoming the errors.|
