Abstract: The purpose of this study is to analvaze the content of Grade9 and 10 English textbooks (English for New Ethiopia(ENT)Series) in terms of performance objectives, To achieve this aim a version of the Taxonomy of educational Objectives developed by Valette and Disick to classify Language behaviors has been used as a start over for analysis. Four steps have been followed in analyzing the content of the textbooks. The first step is concerned with making inventory of the general objectives and the teaching items for each grade. The second step involves the decontextualization of the data by giving a taxonomic representation of the learning: activities in each unit. The third step deals with the specification of the data by stating possible student behaviors in each or the identified each stories of objectives. The last step summarizes the analyses by formulation the realizations. The results of the analysis show: that 89%of the teaching i terns deals wiith vocabulary and grammar 65% of the Learning activities is manipulative' that 72%of the exercise items requires vicarious experiences' and that 57.7%of the expected student behaviour involves speaking and teaching- skills. On the basis of the results, it is concluded that the present content of the English textbooks is essentially satisfactory under the existing difficult teaching and learning circumstances that manipulative Learning activities and .'know-that, experiences are suitable for mechanical and knowledge behaviours’ and that communicative activities and direct experiences are not built into the content of Grade 9 and 10 English textbooks. For the difficult circumstances under which English is 'taught; in Ethiopia at present it is recommended that performance objectives be introduced to schools so that teachers as well as students will be able to the content effectively. However, if the teaching learning: conditions change, it is recommended that the content of the English textbooks be modified In order to facilitate student performance at the higher levels of the taxonomy of educational objectives.
