Abstract: The study was aimed at exploring factors that affect verbal participation behaviours of College English female students. To explore these factors, individual and focus group interviewees were employed. These interviews were with five high and low participators identified for this study. The identification of these two groups of participators was made through three criteria namely students ratings, teachers ratings and video recorded classroom observation. These two groups of participators, pointed out some factors that enhanced and inhibited their verbal participation in College English classes. The high participators, for example, identified factors such as high school background, motivation, role of English instructor, personality, and family background as potential verbal participation enhancing factors while the low participators indicated factors such as personality, language ability, role of language instructors, role of grouping students, as oral participation affecting factors. Based on the findings recommendations were forwarded.
