It e l so sign posts the plan of the study. Chapter two reviews work done in Listening Coinprehension: into,atiol, listening strategies, teaching and testing listening comprehension. The system of analysis used is then described in Cr-.anter three. This is an adaptation of that used by Sinclair and Coulthard (1975), Tests of 1ister'dng we,"e set based on this analysis. Chapter four reports the results of the observation and the analysis of the instructors' language. Chapter five reports the results of the tests in three stages: the students abil ity to use strategies, their ability in the lC'!nI,;juagfuenctions, and their' overall listening ability. Based on these results, conclusions and r-eccomeode t icns are made in Chapter six. The ~esult of the study indicate that the students are below the "level exoected of them in understanding their lectures. They can, ho\t.iE.>veorp,erate better' in asademic S'Ig"lish than in general English.
