To do so, twenty - ~lght students (out of 100) were
systematically selected from the department of Physics,
Mathematics and Chemistry.
To assess the stu1ents' oral performance, two communioative
tasks (picture, ~ased story - telling and picture description)
General orientation was first given to the stu(}.en-csin
order to get them familiarized with the test conditiond.
Moreover, model oral production exercises were given to them.
The oral production tests were given to the students on
two different days. Their oral performances were then
tape - recorded and transcribed- As the aim of the s~ucy
was to assess the students' communicativB performance, required -
information bits of the two test - tasks were identified
The studentst performance was determined in terms of the
positive number of points of required - information - bits
The study showed that the students' communicative
performance was below the minimum expected average 50%).
On the basis of this finding, it was recommended that t,he
students noed intensive oral production exercises. Moreover,
it was recommended that students' oral performance should be
assessed at different intervals in orier to check the students'
weaknesses and streng.thes so that teachers could devise VTnys
and means to upgrade the students~~cative performanoe.|
