Abstract: The aim in undertaking this study was to show whether or not success in reading in English correlateG more closely with content subjects than any other subject selected to be tested in the resoarch. In order to achiove this aim a sample of 318 of the currently enrolled ninth grade students were tested in English, Amharic, Biology, History and Physics to measure their present ability in these subjects. The test papers ~mre corrected and then, the results were compared using statistical analysis. When t-test were carried out between English and each one of the content subjects, and the content subjects with each other, in both cases, significant relationships were obtained. However, the results obtained between the content subjects were found out to be much higher than that of English versus the content subjects. Hence, it was concluded that reading ability in English does not account for improvement in the performance of the content subjects at grade 9 level.
