|Abstract: ||The purpose of this study was to determine both the Comprehension ability of grade 10 students and the readability level of their text book using the coloze procedure and the fry graph respectively.
The readability level of the text books was determined
by taking three-one-hundred-word sample passages from each of the four grade ten textbooks, (English for New Ethiopia for Grade Ten. History for grade Ten, Geography for grade Ten, Biology for Grade Ten) Selected for the study. The Finding show that the study, the finding show that the approximate grade levels of the history, geography, Biology and English are 15,11,9,and 8 respectively. Thus, with its long words (an average of 174 syllables per 100 words), the history text books has been found out to most difficult. The percentage cloze test mean scores of 16.4 for history 19.7 for geography, 23.4 for biology and 26.3 for English confirm the findings of the Fry graph.|
