Title: FACTORS AFFECTING UTILIZATION OF INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS BY PRIMARY ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE TEACHERS OF CENTRAL ZONE OF TIGRAY

Abstract: The purpose of the study was to identify the factors affecting the utilization of instructional materials by lower primary environmental Science teachers of central zone of Tigray. Data was secured from 90 lowers primary teachers, 23 lower primary school principals and 23 school pedagogical heads. All teachers, school principals and SPC heads were taken as sources of data. no sampling was, therefore, used in this study. Questionnaires and observation checklist were used to gather the data. And the secured data were analyzed using percentages and descriptive sentences. Attitude, training, budget and unavailability of instructional materials were the major factors, which were hypothesized to be affecting variables for utilization of instructional materials by primary Environmental science teachers The findings of the study indicated that the attitude of the teachers, principals and SPC heads towards utilization of instructional materials was positive. It also showed that there are some major problems in preparing and utilizing instructional materials. These include: inadequacy of the pre-service training in equipping the teachers with basic skills of preparing and utilizing instructional materials, lack of short term trainings, SPCs suffer from lack of skilled man power and budget allocation, Science kits are not being utilized by science teachers. Most frequently used instructional materials are the blackboard and Charts, Classroom observation by principals is made only twice a year and no emphasis was given to low-cost and no-cost instructional materials.
