Title: A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF VOCATIONAL TRAINING AND EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN GOVERNMENT AND NON GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS /TRAINING CENTERS IN ETHIOPIA

Abstract: This thesis was based on the findings of the research study entitled" Vocational Training and Employment Opportunities in Government and Non Government Vocational Schools /Training Centers in Ethiopia. The main purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of vocational training on the employability of graduates. To this end, an attempt was made to look in to the link between vocational training and the world of work and the major factors affecting this link such as linkage between schools and companies, workshop facilities and curriculum. A comparative method was employed to identify the difference and similarity between 3 government schools and 3 non government training centers. These sample schools were selected from Addis Ababa, Oomiya and SNNPR on the basis of purposive sampling. The subjects of the study were 6 principals 66 teachers, 231 students, 40 vocational graduates and 14 apprenticeship offering companies. Accordingly, the respondent sampling was carried out through purposive and availability sampling techniques. Information was obtained using questionnaires, interviews observation and documents. The results indicated that, the majority of teachers in both groups had only college diploma. Admission in government schools was generally based on high school performance while non government training centers in most cases administer entrance examination. The participation of students in producing saleable items was relatively low in government schools than non government training centers. As the results of the t-test indicate, there was significant mean difference between the two groups. To this effect, the adequacy, relevance and up-to-dateness of workshop facilities in non government training centers were better than government schools. On top of this, in-school and out-of-school follow-up activities including visiting the apprentices and conducting tracer studies were far advanced in non government training centers than government schools. Hence, it is concluded that despite the competitive job market, the graduates of non government training centers had better employment opportunities than the graduates of government schools. Therefore, it is recommended that government schools have to widen employment opportunities by strengthening 'earning while leaning' activities and public relation affairs. The government also ought to encourage private companies so that they could share the costs of the training and create more jobs for the graduates.
