| Abstract: | Household energy is becoming one of the major problems in most of urban settings.
Unlike the rural areas fuel wood is commercialized, in urban areas. Urban energy
consumption is a very dynamic phenomenon which changes overtime as fuel supplies,
urban income and fuel prices change. Since it is a fundamental necessity and becoming
increasingly difficult to obtain affordable household energy, appropriate technologies,
which contribute for proper utilization of the available resources, should have an
impact in reducing environmental degradation.
The study was based on factors affecting the use of fuel saving technologies at
household level by taking the case of two woredas in Addis Ababa. The woredas were
selected from the central part of the city based on the proximity to the center and
attachment to the nearby rural kebeles. Descriptive analyses and logistic regression
were used to determine the most important factors, which influence the use of fuelsaving
technologies. The study revealed that the major factors, which dictated the use of
fuel-saving technologies in urban areas, include household income, family size, place of
birth, education level and sex of the household head. The result of the logistic
regression model showed that household income is the most important factor
determining the use of fuel-saving technology, while level of education, sex of the
household, family size and place of birth have significant association with owning the
technology.
It is recommended that projects related to household energy should be strengthened to
develop affordable appliances while income targeted investment in a more appropriate
technologies should be encouraged. Emphasis on increasing the awareness of users
should be enhanced in order to disseminate the available technology. Besides,
expansion of other alternative energy (renewable) sources through private sector and
non-governmental organization has to be encouraged. |
