| Abstract: | This study examined the experiences of mother beggars. It was conducted in Ureal Church and
the near by traffic light in Addis Ababa with seven mothers who were practicing begging. The
study is qualitative study, which employed case study as a research design. Data were collected
through semi structured interview and observation. The key findings of the study are: participant
found to perceive begging in different ways. Some of the words they used to explain begging
includes: begging as business activity or shikela and means of overcoming hardship. The entire
respondents indicated that they were unable to pursue a better way of life; because, they have
limited chance to do other jobs due to the responsibility they have as a child care taker. On the
other hand, being a mother is found to be advantageous by the fact that donors more likely feel
sympathy to the mothers carry small children. Poverty was cited as the major reason for
participants’ engagement in begging. In addition to that, divorce, separation, unwanted
pregnancy and child birth related responsibilities as immediate causes which forced them to
pursue begging as a way of survival. In the attempt of getting sympathy and aid, mother beggars
found to employ variety of artful tactics in terms of what to say, how to act and when to beg.
Economic problem is the most kind of difficulties come across by mother beggars. Emotionally
they experienced feeling sense of insecurity. For these problems, I recommended the social work
skills and intervention to be used in practice to enhance and bring positive change in lives of
beggars in general and mother beggars in particular. Social workers can play plenty of roles in
working with beggars and their related problems such as case management, counseling and
facilitative roles. Begging and begging related problems needs to be given due attention in social
policies so as to reduce and prevent the magnitude and occurrence of the problem.
