Abstract: The field of quality has undergone significant changes as reflected by changes in its definition, paradigms, approaches, techniques, and scope of application. Changes in customer expectation have driven the changes in the technology of design and manufacturing, which is becoming more important in satisfying individual customer expectations. This also calls for special attention to the engineering aspects of quality. This paper tried to apply Taguchi’s method of quality engineering for optimum setting of process parameters for the plastic production so that variation of performance from target value could be minimized. Ethiopia Plastic Share Company (EPSC) was used as a case company to show the application of Taguchi’s methods (design of experiment) together with loss function. Specifically, the thesis is designed to develop Taguchi’s method of designed experiment to alleviate process design problems of some of EPSC products. The quality loss for the current performance variation was estimated using Taguchi’s principle of loss function and requirement for improvement was proven. For the improvement purpose design of experiment was applied to optimize the process parameters (which is considered to be the main causes for performance variation of products) of a four selected products. The products were selected from conduit, wires and cables and poly products. Temperature zones were considered as process parameters for the products and they have three to seven zones of temperature settings. And the levels allocated for these temperature zones were two levels for poly product and four levels for others. Orthogonal arrays used in this optimization process were L8, L16, and L27 for the products. The result of the experiment was analyzed using commercial Minitab 15 software. Depending on the analysis of results, interpretation was made and optimized factor settings were chosen. Using the factors being chosen the performance value was predicted and based on the predicted values of the performances of the products; loss function is calculated and compared with the quality loss before implementation of design of experiment (Taguchi’s method). From this it was understood that, using Taguchi’s method of design of experiment improves the quality loss because of performance deviation (scrap inclusive) by about 89.95% for the selected products of the company.
