| Abstract: | Diraytata employs two strategies to focalize a constituent in a
clause. The first strategy has to do with focus marking in simple
affirmative declarative sentences. Regarding the constituents that
are focalized, three constituent phrases need to be identified,
namely subject noun phrase, verb and constituents such as
complement or adpositional phrases of adverbial functions. It is
the form of the verb that indicates which of the constituents is
focalized in a clause. An affirmative declarative perfective
predicate appears in three forms, the full, reduced and neutral
forms. When the full form of the predicate is used, it is the verb
which is focalized. When the reduced form is used, it is the
complement phrase which is focalized. Similarly when the neutral
form is used, it is the subject noun phrase which is focalized. The
second strategy of focus marking is by using the focus marking
morpheme pa. The focus marker pa occurs in copulative sentences
and relative clauses. In such structures the focus marker
morpheme pa occurs following the focalized constituent. |
