|Abstract: ||The effectiveness of teaching /learning process as a part of the
completely educational process has to be seen as closely connected
with the teacher performance itself. Most /al teachers consciously or
unconsciously show unwanted characters tics which have a negative
effect on the teaching learning process. The unprepared teacher who
omits important elements, teach inaccurate facts, have poor timing and
lack any logical presentation has a negative effect on the instructional
process. On the other hand, the teachers’ personality, his knowledge and
experience, his skills, personal qualities, attitude and aspirations, his
command of knowledge, his helpfulness contributes very strongly to
successful work in the education of the young generation.
The main purpose of this study is investigating the teaching skill of first
cycle primary school teachers. The study was conducted in six schools in
and around Hosanna town.
In order to identify the skills of teaching observation guideline,
questionnaire and document analysis checklist were developed. All
instruments were pre-tested for their usefulness and practicality. In the
study six schools, twenty-four teachers and twelve directors were
To find out reasons for some of the phenomena post evaluation
questionnaire were conducted to the sampled teachers.
The data collected by these instruments was tabulated and analyzed.
The date collected by these instruments was listed and ranked in order
of frequency. All these data were used to discover, discuss and interpret
the phenomena. The general results revealed that, most of primary
school teachers are inadequate in skill of teaching. Therefore, due
consideration must be given to improve teaching skill of teachers to
improve the quality of primary education in our country.|
